Chopin Piano Sonata No 3 in B minor

Since winning the 1983 Naumburg Piano Competition in New York, Stephen Hough has gone on to become one of the world’s leading pianists. Not content with that, he is also a successful composer and a highly respected author with several books to his credit. Two iconic romantic piano masterpieces by 19th century virtuoso pianists Chopin and Liszt form the core of this programme. They are juxtaposed with a selection of pieces by Cécile Chaminade whose music has been compared to that of Saint-Saëns and Gounod and, as a pianist, she took part in some of the very earliest recordings and even made piano rolls!

“Few living pianists manage to combine open-hearted virtuosity with so tangible and unaffected a sense of an inner world beyond the notes.” The Arts Desk
