Celebrate the first anniversary of the renovated Perth Theatre – Scotland’s first repertoire theatre established in 1900 – with illustrations and scale models from Richard Murphy Architects as well as works from our museum collection by Debra Salem and Jolanta Dolewska.
Take also our second annual Perth Theatre Set Design Challenge featuring 11 primary schools across Perth and Kinross including Tulloch, Oakbank, Logiealmond, Kinnoull, Inch View, Collace, Comrie, Abernethy, Kilgraston, Our Lady’s and Guildtown. Read more here
Explore 25 years since the first Richard Murphy Architects project for the arts – the renovation of the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh – re-opened in 1993. See this and nine subsequent buildings illustrated in this exhibition at Threshold artspace with the most recent being the renovated Perth Theatre with its restored auditorium completed in November 2017. Hear The Perth Theatre Memory Collective Oral History Project by Debra Salem following her artist-in-residency at Perth Theatre Archive throughout 2016-17 – a resource of recorded anecdotes and memories of Perth Theatre which go back to the 1940s and up to the point of closure for theatre redevelopment in early 2015. See Repertoire or Bad Photo, I am Much Nicer Looking by Joanna Dolewska – a set of 19 artist’s postcards following her artist-in-residency at Perth Theatre Archive throughout 2017. Dolewska’s project features archival photographs of actors Valerie Lush, Jennifer Angus, Ron Bain, Sheila Cooper, Liza Goddard, Maud Risdon, Robert Docherty, Catherine Salked, Mary Laine, Francesca Annis, Denise Hirst, Lillian Welsh, Anthony Stamm, John Vail, John Joyce, William Armow, William Wallace, Roger Gale and Ian Norris. View also the Perth Theatre Scrapbook (1927-33) on loan from Perth and Kinross Archive Service which inspired both Dolewska’s and Salem’s works and relax in front of the time-lapse video of Perth Theatre redevelopment (2015-17).
