Beethoven: Bagatelle Op 33 No 4 in A
Schubert: Piano Sonata No 20 in A D959
Osborne: Improvisation on a Theme by Keith Jarrett
Rachmaninov: Piano Sonata No 1
Scotland’s master pianist returns with a blockbuster of a programme. He has long been interested in jazz and he brings his own improvisation on a theme of Keith Jarrett. Framing it are two widely differing sonatas. Schubert’s A major is a masterpiece of poise and Rachmaninov’s is full of passion and the extraordinary virtuosity which in combination underpin his greatness as a composer. Beethoven’s early Bagatelle offers the ideal amuse bouche.
'Steven Osborne takes Rachmaninov seriously, realizes his conceptions to the nth degree, and has something to say in this repertoire’
