'My background is in filmmaking and I still work on film when I have a chance to, either on 16mm or Super8 film – I still love the colour saturation the film offers, and the texture, the grain embedded in the image – but I work mostly in high definition and more and more in 4K now'

Explore the first solo exhibition in a public institution by the multi-award winning Canadian artist and filmmaker Marlene Millar.

See 30 works by Marlene Millar spanning 30 years of her creative practice exhibited for the first time in a contemporary art museum and gallery setting. Traverse the cinematic world with those constantly on the move who star in Marlene Millar’s documentaries, film essays and screen installations including in PILGRIMAGE (2017) – the poetically acclaimed short dance film in our museum collection. Navigate the unchartered terrain of lost memory and dementia through WITNESS (2019) – Horsecross Arts new commission and museum acquisition.

Navigate the unchartered terrain of lost memory and dementia through WITNESS (2019) – Horsecross Arts new commission and museum acquisition by Marlene Millar – featuring natural choreography by Carol Prieur. It is presented in the Norrie Miller Studio as a large-scale video and sound installation for multiple screens.

ARTIST’S RESIDENCY

Hosted by Horsecross Arts, Marlene Millar undertook an artist’s residency at Threshold artspace while connecting with fellow artists and audiences across Perth and Scotland. The residency largely informed the exhibition preview, the new Horsecross Arts commissions, the survey exhibition at the artspace while laying the foundations for the international exhibition tour.

SNEAK PREVIEW

A selection of Marlene Millar’s MIGRATION series of films – all featured in the exhibition at Threshold artspace – screened for one night only at Netherbow Theatre, Scottish Storytelling Centre as part of Edinburgh’s mini-festival of percussive dance. This pre-exhibition screening was followed by a post-show Q&A with Marlene Millar, Iliyana Nedkova and special guests Sandy Silva and Nic Gareiss.

VERNISSAGE

Seven of Marlene Millar’s works screened for one day only at the Gannochy Auditorium, Perth Concert Hall as part of the exhibition vernissage. The films were accompanied with live music, dance and poetry performances, as well as a Q&A with the artist who was joined by special guests from Danns Ed including dancers and choreographers Holly Mcdonald, Sarah Peachey and Dru Stine; presenter and screen dance curator Gitta Wigro; filmmaker Simon Fildes; performance poet Jim Mackintosh and Craigie Community Choir led by composer and musician Debra Salem.

 

MOVEMENT

See Marlene Millar’s WITNESS (2019) as part of our off-site touring exhibition of dance films Movement at two locations in Edinburgh. Enjoy this collective moving image homage to the pioneering contemporary dance diva Margaret Morris (1891–1980) created by Scottish and international contemporary visual artists and filmmakers whose works have been commissioned and acquired by Horsecross Arts for the Threshold artspace collection of contemporary art.
