Handel’s Acis and Galatea is a miniature masterpiece. The tragic love story of Acis, loved by Galatea, killed by Polyphemus and turned into a fountain is at first sight mythical nonsense. But Handel delivers it with some of his very best arias and choruses. Numbers such as ‘love in her eyes sits playing’ and choruses like ‘wretched lovers’ are as good as anything he ever wrote. Not to be missed.
