Perth Theatre continues its triumphant return to the Scottish theatre stage with David Harrower’s modern classic Knives in Hens.

Artistic director Lu Kemp directs the Perth Theatre production which runs in the transformed theatre’s restored auditorium from Thursday 1 until Saturday 17 February.

Striking chords with audiences worldwide with its timeless and borderless themes of passion, betrayal and vengeance, Knives in Hens is now the most internationally performed modern Scottish play next to JM Barrie’s Peter Pan.

Set in a pre-industrial isolated Scottish rural community, Knives in Hens explores the love triangle between a nameless young woman, her ploughman husband and the hated village miller. The coming of age tale includes the young woman’s emerging realisation of the expressive power of language and its ability to transport her beyond her bleak existence. Dark and hard-hitting, the one-act play by one of Scotland’s foremost playwrights will capture the imagination and stay in the memory long after its performance.

Lu Kemp said:

“It has been my ambition to direct Knives in Hens, since I saw the original production in 1995. The play has a way of grabbing you and not letting you go, it is absorbing, gritty, sucks you into this very small and brutal world and leaves you thinking about it for months afterwards. The reason behind its amazing global success is that it speaks to everyone, of all countries – these are universal and ageless themes. I am really looking forward to bringing it to Perth audiences, I hope it gets under their skin as much as it has got under mine!”

Knives in Hens features Jessica Hardwick, winner of the CATS (Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland) Best Newcomer Award 2014, Michael Moreland, last seen in Perth Theatre in Cinderella and Macbeth, and marks a Perth Theatre debut for Rhys Rusbatch. Knives in Hens is designed by the winners of the CATS Award for Design 2015, the team behind Lyceum’s Bondagers.

Knives in Hens runs in Perth Theatre from Thursday 1 to Saturday 17 February. There are reduced price preview performances at 7.30pm on Thursday 1 and Friday 2 February and at 2pm on Saturday 3 February. Book all three Perth Theatre season shows for a discounted price.
