Open to all, with no audition required, Southern Fried Voices has been a regular feature of the Southern Fried Festival for much of its existence. Highlights of Southern Fried Voices include performing on the main stage alongside top acts for Johnny Cash: Songwriter, workshops with Cyndi Cain, singing at the Southern Fried Gospel Brunch, and at Sunday Morning Coming Down with Yola Carter.
Southern Fried Voices will step out from the back of the stage this year to lead the Saturday Morning Coming Down show in Perth Concert Hall on Saturday 29 July.
The special 10th Anniversary Southern Fried Horsecross Voices runs in June and July. Horsecross Voices favourite, Debra Salem will work with the choir to create a set of songs from across the American Roots genre, from bluegrass to gospel and from country to blues, including favourite songs from previous performances. Rehearsals start on Wednesday 21 June, running over six weeks culminating in the performance on Saturday 29 July.
Debra Salem said:
“Perth and Kinross has a great many wonderful choirs and vocal ensembles, many of which stop over the summer. For all those people missing their singing and looking for something to do - Southern Fried Voices is the answer. We use music, but it is not necessary to be able to read as we will be providing learning aids this year. And with it being the 10th Anniversary of Southern Fried we are not just singing backing vocals but have a number of songs on our own. We had a great time last year, lots of hard work but it was really worth it.”
Young people aged 10 upwards can take part in Junior Southern Fried Voices. Over 3 days, Horsecross Arts music facilitator, Joanne Greer, will lead the group through American Roots music harmony, backing and solos. Junior Southern Fried Voices will take place from Monday 17 to Wednesday 19 July and the choir will open for Southern Fried Voices and join them to perform at Saturday Morning Coming Down on Saturday 29 July. Southern Fried Voices participants will receive a 10% discount on Southern Fried Voices Junior places.
Nick Lowe, Loudon Wainwright III and Beth Nielsen Chapman headline the tenth Southern Fried Festival which will also feature Andy Fairweather Low & The Hi Riders and an all-star cast of singers in Rock ‘n’ Roll Music: The Songs of Chuck Berry, as well as North Star: Scotland sings Canada, a celebration of Canadian artists.Named Scottish Event Awards Best Small Festival 2014, the Southern Fried Festival takes place in Perth Concert Hall and other city centre venues from Thursday 27 until Sunday 30 July.
