From cooling classics and delightful drama to dazzling dance, whip-crackin’ musicals, red hot roots music and fun join-in events there’s plenty to entertain in the May:Aug brochure from Horsecross Arts.

The current series of popular Perth Piano Sundays concerts culminates with a debut Perth Concert Hall recital by Martin Roscoe performing Schubert’s last and greatest piano sonata and Perth’s own Alasdair Beatson presents two blazing masterpieces by Schubert and Beethoven. Britain’s best-selling classical artist Russell Watson hosts an Intimate Evening of songs and entertainment and Maxwell String Quartet complete their lunchtime journey through Schubert’s String Quartets. Much-loved violinist Nicola Benedetti makes a welcome return to Perth Concert Hall in September.

Perth’s Southern Fried Festival of American roots music returns for its eighth year with this year’s line-up featuring Punch Brothers, Rhiannon Giddens, the McCrary Sisters and many more as well as an all-female celebration of the songs of Dolly Parton, an outdoor stage, free gigs and more. Lau and Treacherous Orchestra push the boundaries of folk music in two explosive shows, reggae legends UB40 take the stage and The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain gets up to its usual hilarious plucking antics. Free late night event Transformations sees the Perth Concert Hall foyer metamorphose into a unique space hosting a heady blend of music, fashion and visual art that will appeal to all adventurous spirits.

There is a five-night run of everyone’s Secret Love, the fabulous Calamity Jane starring I’d Do Anything winner Jodie Prenger. Gun-slingin’ tomboy Calamity and her adventures in Wild West and that famous Windy City will be whip-crackin’ fun for all the family in July.

Horsecross Arts joins up with Dundee Rep for a co-production of Charles Dickens’ classic Great Expectations in stunning adaptation by Jo Clifford. Audiences can take the air with a twenty minute stroll before A Walk at the Edge of the World, Magnetic North’s award-winning reflection on the state of mind created by walking and one of rock singing’s most iconic stars is remembered in Janis Joplin: Full Tilt.

Younger audiences and their grown-ups will be charmed and entertained by Hup, a relaxing and comfortable introduction to classical music for 0 – 24 month olds and little terrors aged 3+ will enjoy the tyrannosauric treat; Dinosaur Zoo. Horsecross Arts young creatives take to the stage in June to showcase their performance, musical, playwriting and dance skills.

Perth Festival of the Arts takes over Perth Concert Hall for two weeks in May, presenting a rich and varied programme which includes The Proclaimers, Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, saxophonist Courtney Pine, King Creosote and West End comedy show The Only Way is Downton.

Looking ahead to Perth Concert Hall’s 10th Birthday in September, a week of celebrations will include a community carnival, a family ceilidh, kids’ events, concerts, hog roast and more.
