Dundee Rep Ensemble and Horsecross Arts are working together for the first time on a joint production of Charles Dickens’ epic tale Great Expectations. Opening at Dundee Rep Theatre in June, this striking piece of theatre will then transfer to Perth Concert Hall bringing two east coast institutions together.

This remarkable adaptation by Jo Clifford is directed by Dundee Rep’s Artistic Director Jemima Levick. Clifford and Levick previously worked together on Dundee Rep Ensemble’s critically acclaimed Anna Karenina (2011).

This adaptation focuses on Pip’s right of passage from boy to man and the poignant journey he undertakes pursuing that which is eternally out of his reach. In an era when social standing and ambition is key this remarkable story of rags to riches proves that money can’t buy you love.

A multi award-winning creative team including Olivier Award-Winner lighting designer Mike Robertson and the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland winning composer and musician David Paul Jones brings Becky Minto’s set design to life. Becky has taken inspiration for her spectacular and atmospheric set from the elegant and stylish salons that were found throughout Europe in the 19th century.

Dundee Rep Theatre’s Artistic Director Jemima Levick said “We are delighted to be working with Jo Clifford on her fabulous adaptation of Dickens’ classic novel, Great Expectations. This period drama brings together a fantastic company of performers to create a classic story to a contemporary audience”.

Great Expectations opens at Dundee Rep Thursday 4 and runs until Saturday 20 June at 7.30pm. Matinees will be held Saturdays 13 & 20 and Thursday 11& 18 June at 2.30pm.
