The Sep-Dec classical season from Horsecross Arts starts off on the right note in Perth Concert Hall with clarinettist Maximiliano Martín joining the Scottish Chamber Orchestra for Summer Classics on Friday 12 September and a rare opportunity to see a staging of Monteverdi’s greatest opera from Ryedale Festival Opera on Monday 15 September.
The popular Perth Piano Sundays season begins on Sunday 5 October with the Perth Concert Hall debut by one of the world’s most distinguished pianists Steven Kovacevich performing works by Bach, Brahms and Beethoven. Further delights in store in the ten-concert series which runs until June include returns from Perth favourites Steven Osborne, Alasdair Beatson and Llŷr Williams plus newcomers to the hall Juho Pohjonen and Martin Roscoe. At the core of the series are three piano based programmes around Myths of Eastern Europe led by the brilliant young pianist James Baillieu featuring guest appearances by singers Anna Huntley and Robert Murray and the Heath Quartet. The 3pm Sunday concerts presented by Michael Tumelty have grown in popularity since they were launched in 2013 with many concert-goers making a day of it by enjoying the carvery lunch served beforehand in Perth Concert Hall’s Glassrooms Café.
Monday Lunchtime Concerts in Perth Concert Hall include brilliant young Italian String Quartet Quartetto di Cremona playing Shostakovich and Beethoven on Monday 6 October. Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s Brahms Horn Trio led by the BBC New Generation Artist Alec Gemmill visit on Monday 27 October; Maxwell String Quartet play Schubert’s Death and the Maiden Quartet on Monday 1 December.
Scotland’s national orchestras return for another exclusive Perth Concert Series beginning with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra who are joined by Aleksei Kiseliov for a performance of Elgar’s haunting Cello Concerto on Thursday 9 October. BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Scottish Chamber Orchestra continue the series with a selection of some of the world’s greatest musical masterpieces in collaboration with a host of top artists including Kari Kriikku, Maximiliano Martín, Steven Osborne and Francesco Piemontesi.
Alasdair Beatson joins the Scottish Ensemble for Mozart and Moz-art on Sunday 26 October. The atmospheric St John’s Kirk is the venue for Night and Day: Concerts by Candlelight on Wed 10 December. The Scottish Ensemble returns to Perth Concert Hall in May for From Russia with Love featuring works by Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich.
Famed for their Bach performances, Gramophone award-winning vocal group Vox Luminis comes to Scotland for the first time for an exclusive concert in St John’s Kirk on Wednesday 15 October. World famous Korean violinist Kyung-Wha Chung makes a much anticipated visit in November. A leading light in the musical world for the last thirty years, this five star event is a fantastic coup for Perth Concert Hall.
The Dunedin Consort returns to St John’s Kirk on Friday 19 December for a performance of Handel’s Christmas masterpiece, The Messiah.
