Brand new songs, writing by primary school children, inspired by connections with care home residents.

Over the course of September 2021 to June 2022, The Harmony Project established relationships and collaborative connections between three local primary schools and three local care-home residents.

The pairings were:

  • Cleish Primary School with Causeway Court in Kinross
  • Milnathort Primary School with Ashley House also in Milnathort
  • Guildtown Primary school with the Robert Douglas Memorial Home in Scone

Working with a musician and a drama facilitator, the schools and care homes each participated a series of music and storytelling workshops. The artists working with both groups used letter writing, videos and pictures, to introduce the groups to each other, find out about their experiences and hopes, so that they could be inspired by each other's stories and ideas.

In their classrooms, the children then collectively wrote their songs inspired by the residents, their stories and their homes.

The project recently concluded in three moving performances of the new songs back to the care home residents, plus a professional recording session at Perth Concert Hall so that all the participants can continue to enjoy their songs whenever they like.

We hope to see future editions of The Harmony Project take place, so that more intergenerational connections can flourish!
