Perth Festival of the Arts

Russian Treasures - Rare choral gems and celebrated sacred music from the Russian Orthodox Church.

You’ll never forget the first time you hear the choral music of Russia. From the subterranean bass notes to the melodies that soar above them, this is singing that simply has to be experienced in the flesh.

This concert features popular favourites and little known gems, rarely heard outside Russia. St John’s Kirk will be a marvellous setting for a Perth Festival of the Arts debut of the critically acclaimed choir.

Songs from Rachmaninov’s ‘All night Vigil’ and his ‘Liturgy of St John Chrysostom’ will be performed alongside pieces by Glinka, Chesnokov and Tchaikovsky and many others. Tenebrae Described as “phenomenal” (The Times) and “devastatingly beautiful” (Gramophone Magazine), award-winning choir Tenebrae, under the direction of Nigel Short, is one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles renowned for its passion and precision. Tenebrae has twice secured the award for Best Choral Performance in the BBC Music Magazine Awards (2012 and 2016), and its recording of Fauré’s Requiem with the London Symphony Orchestra was nominated for the Gramophone Awards (2013). Tenebrae is renowned for its highly-acclaimed interpretations of choral music with repertoire ranging from the Renaissance through to contemporary choral masterpieces and has appeared at major festivals including the BBC Proms, Edinburgh International Festival and Montreux Choral Festival (Switzerland). This season, in order to mark Tenebrae’s fifteenth anniversary, the choir is touring its first major commission, Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles, as well as launching its inaugural Holy Week Festival at St John’s Smith Square.
