North Star: Scotland Sings Canada

featuring Justin Currie, Karine Polwart, James Grant, Kris Drever, Dean Owens, Emma Pollock, and special guests Cyndi Cain + Joey Landreth

We close the festival with a specially created show to celebrate Southern Fried’s 10th birthday and the 150th Anniversary of Canada’s foundation.

North Star will see some of Scotland’s finest musicians and singers exploring the huge influence Canadian artists have exerted over generations of writers and performers across the world but particularly those playing music whose roots are in the southern states of the USA.

Way ahead of their time, The Band were without doubt the very first Americana group, bringing together elements of old-time, country, blues, early jazz, R&B and rock’n’roll and their own unique magic to create something that sounded utterly new and organically ancient at the same time.

Another three iconic Canadian artists – Neil Young, Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell – (along with Bob Dylan and Van Morrison) defined what it was to be a songwriter in the late 60’s and early 70s, and the contours they carved out on that map have barely changed since. Their massive influence arguably looms larger now than ever, irrespective of genre, but especially on the music and musicians that Southern Fried embraces.

North Star will also include songs by some of Canada’s seemingly endless roll-call of great artists in a unique one-off show that will appeal to all fans of great songwriting.

Individual tickets £22.50; concessions £20 (inc £1.50 booking fee per ticket)
