ELEPHANT

“You’re too big in the room... shortening my breath... How the hell did you get in here – up the stairs?... Trunk lying across the floor... Don’t give up, don’t give up. I can see you”

What if the elephant is real? Meet five women who are living with an elephant in the room. Elephant is a piece of verbatim theatre based on participants’ writings from the‘My Story, My Stage project. ELEPHANT brings together these stories in a play about life and survival.

Since November 2021, Perth Theatre and Mindspace Perth & Kinross have delivered creative writing workshops for anyone with lived experience of mental health issues. Creative writing is proven to have mental health benefits - it provides space to create and share stories, offer support by listening to one another, and encourages greater confidence in writing. Led by writer Jane Archer, participants have had the opportunity to explore autobiographical writing in different forms. Elephant is the story of people's lives, the story of learning to live with the elephant in the room.
