Exhibition Guide

Acres Wild comprises 50 new and recent works on paper showing for the first time. All works are printed and signed by the artist in 2009 as the first in a new edition of inkjet prints on archival paper mounted on aluminium. Each available to purchase as part of Horsecross new initiative for collectable contemporary art Collect + Support where the proceeds are re-invested in the exhibition programme at Threshold artspace featuring artists based in and around Perthshire.

Acres Wild charts two formal themes - the toned monochrome and the deep colour – by pushing the concept of working with all available light or stripping the scene to its basics. All works are envisaged as final compositions before the shutter release button was pressed: no
digital manipulation was at play.

Styczen says: “My aim is to capture the beauty of the natural world and my current passion is the Scottish natural landscape. I try and visit remote areas, hiking and often camping on location. I particularly enjoy working in the East Coast, the Western Isles and Scottish Highlands, despite the difficulties that the weather and remoteness of some locations present. Since coastal landscape is close to my heart, I feel privileged to be able to work in the part of the UK offering some of the most varied and dramatic coastline.”

Marek Styczen (Born 1976 in Elblag, Poland. Lives and works in Perth) is an artist who has been exploring photography since 2001. Styczen graduated from the University of Gdansk with a degree in English Studies (British Literature) and has a background in jazz music.

Acres Wild is produced by the artist and Horsecross for Threshold artspace.

Curated by Iliyana Nedkova as part of Horsecross’ Scottish Tides-Polish Spring: a three month celebration of Scotland’s vibrant cultural connections with Poland.

Supported by Scottish Arts Council New Work Fund, the Scottish Executive’s Homecoming Scotland 2009 and Adam Mickiewicz Institute’s Polska! Year.
