Schubertiad 2011

Schubertiad 2011

     “a lively, flexible ensemble which

brings together some of the most

       exciting young singers around”

Opera Today on The Prince Consort

Click here to download the programmeWhen one thinks of Schubert, one thinks first and foremost of melody. Many of his most marvellous orchestral works are suffused with easily singable tunes. This gift is experienced in its most pure form in his extraordinary song output. This year’s Schubertiad focuses on Schubert’s vocal music in the context of his predecessors and successors framed by three key instrumental works - ‘Death and the Maiden’ Quartet, ‘Arpeggione’ Sonata and ‘Wanderer Fantasy’ – and some of his unforgettable music
for piano duet.

The Prince Consort is a dynamic group of singers led by pianist Alisdair Hogarth. They are rapidly developing a unique reputation for their performances at the Wigmore Hall, London. Their mission is to reinvent the great tradition of song recitals in a way which makes it fresh for new audiences. Having The Prince Consort join us for the weekend means we have the luxury of four singers in residence enabling us to hear several singers in each concert and also to experience vocal ensemble music both by Schubert and also his great admirer and successor Brahms. Particularly fascinating is the opportunity
to hear a series of Schubert songs performed in their original versions and then performed in their arrangements by virtuoso pianists such as Liszt and Rachmaninoff. Alisdair Hogarth will be a tired man by Sunday evening!

The artists roster is completed by the exciting Escher String Quartet, who have just joined the BBC’s Next Generation Artists scheme, and two artists well known to Perth audiences – Alasdair Beatson and William Conway.

Please note, the seating for the concerts below marked with an asterisk (*) will be cabaret style. Seats are reserved and there are four seats per table.
