Perth Theatre production is tribute to hostages spirit

SWWOMIn his introduction to Someone Who'll Watch Over Me, dedicated to him by writer Frank McGuinness, former Beirut hostage Brian Keenan said:

"McGuinness hit on, with a playwright's subtlety, guilt, love, loneliness and all the gamut of emotions that make us, break us and remake us."

Inspired by the strength of spirit shown by Keenan and his fellow captives, Someone Who'll Watch Over Me in Perth Theatre from Friday 10 until Saturday 25 February follows three hostages chained in a dark room not knowing why they have been captured, how many days have passed or if they are waiting for death or release.

Together, in their imaginations and friendships small escapes are found.  They write letters to those left behind, recreate favourite films and re-live Virginia Wade's 1977 Wimbledon triumph...

A rare opportunity to see a professional Scottish production of the West End and Broadway hit, Someone Who'll Watch Over Me is directed by Rachel O'Riordan, Horsecross Arts creative director for theatre.  She said:

"Frank McGuinness is a playwright with a ferocious empathy for human beings, good and bad, weak and strong. He brings this to full fruition in Someone Who'll Watch Over Me. It's a timeless play- none of us know how we would behave in extremis, or how we would behave to others when our back is against the wall."
