Schubert's Scotland revisited; fans flock to the Fair City

Almost 200 years ago he put Perthshire on the map, launching the region's tourist trade with a little help from Sir Walter Scott.

Now one of the world's most acclaimed composers is doing it again; attracting visitors to the landscape he so loved for a festival of romance, song and world-class performers.
Franz Schubert took Walter Scott's popular romance, The Lady of the Lake, and ran with it, musically speaking. Through words and music Schubert and Scott celebrated the beauty of the Trossachs and Perthshire, and in doing so attracted visitors from throughout Europe.

Following in the footsteps of these 19th-century tourists, an influx of romantics is expected to the Fair City this month for Schubertiad 2008, a no-holds barred celebration of Schubert building on the popular and critical success of last year's inaugural event.
In the build-up to the festival, fans of the Viennese virtuoso have been swotting up with a series of lunchtime sessions exploring Schubert's life and works with festival director Svend Brown.

The Schubert in Depth series has delved into the composer's love for Scotland, his affinity with nature and the Schubertiads that took place during his lifetime.
To celebrate Schubert's passion for Scotland's historical landscape, the festival will launch in dramatic fashion on Friday 10 October within the stunning surroundings of Scone Palace where visitors will be treated to excerpts from The Lady of the Lake accompanied by traditional Scots instrument, the clarsach.

Guided walks through the grounds of Scone Palace and the historic city of Perth will add to the atmosphere of the event which will feature international musicians including pianists The Vienna Piano Trio, Paul Lewis, Simon Lepper, Artur Pizarro, Vita Panomariovaite, Michael Hampton, violinist Thomas Gould and clarsach player Catriona Mackay as well as vocalists Jonathan Lemalu, Stephan Loges, Katherine Broderick and Anna Stephany.
