Electronic graffiti workshops at Threshold artspace

The latest trend to arrive at Perth Concert Hall's Threshold artspace from across the pond comes in the form of electronic graffiti. Developed by resident artists from New York's Eyebeam — a leading organisation for digital culture, the 'LED throwies' are an inexpensive, DIY way to add a touch of sparkle and colour to any magnetic surface.

Now, you can get the chance to try it out for yourself at Perth Concert Hall's Glowing Throwies workshops on 18 November and 2 December. Build your own state-of-the-art 'throwie' from a battery, a light-emitting diode and a magnet. Then launch the throwie onto the steel girders of the glazed façade of the concert hall, making it all glow.

The workshops are open to young people age 12+ and are led by New Zealand-born Perthshire based artist and electronics guru Simon Bogle, who studied Applied Computing at the University of Dundee.

I am very pleased that Threshold artspace, Scotland's only dedicated gallery for digital art, is the first venue in the UK to offer this exciting opportunity to a new generation of graffiti artists from across Perthshire, says Iliyana Nedkova, creative director of new media art at Horsecross.

What's more, we will extend the spectacle by creating a brand-new short film about the arrival of the glowing throwies in Perth. The new film by Simon Bogle which will include snippets of electronic graffiti produced by Perth's young artists will be unveiled at the end of the workshop on 2 December. It will make up part of our new festive exhibition called Sparkle and can be seen on the 22 screens of the Threshold Wave.

This is the first partnership project between Horsecross, Eyebeam, New York and Eyebeam's Graffiti Research Lab dedicated to outfitting graffiti artists with open source technologies for urban communication.

Workshops will take place at 4pm on Saturday 18 November and Saturday 2 December at Threshold artspace, Perth Concert Hall. To join call box office 0845 612 6319. Price £3.
